How do we plan our cruising route?

This post could be a book, and, in fact, is.  Cruising guides make up a large part of the sailing literature. 
But you can start with this picture:

This shows the historical hurricane, cyclone, and typhoon tracks for 20 years.  If we added another layer you would see that these storms are almost strictly seasonal, meaning that they mostly occur only during a certain 6 month period of the year.  And if you look closely you'll notice that the storms typically don't spin around the equator.

So step one to planning our cruising destinations has to do with this cyclical repetition of storm seasons.  We will try to follow the advice of Turtle and apply it to tropical storms:  "when the waves break here, don't be there, or you gonna get drilled"
